What is motivation?

At first, I asked this question from myself; why do I need to write a blog on this topic?
(Well, first of all, let me explain why did I ask that question from myself? Because I did not have enough motivation. (Full stop!). Then I found this answer; in a recent Twitter survey, my followers pointed ‘Motivation as the main reason for their interest in Kindness’.
So, here comes my definition of motivation. When we do something new, the most challenging part is the beginning. Unless we have a logical reason or a positive inspiration, we basically procrastinate. Motivation is the oxygen to fuel desire to begin the journey. It may be coming from within the self, or from an outside source.

So, it is noteworthy that you are a construct of mind, words and action. Then, your interactions with others take place through your words and action. As a result, kindness manifests through these three building blocks; mind, words and action.

He was a homeless person, seeking some help. A minute ago, I was thinking about my hunger (only me), all of a sudden, I started empathising the desire of another stranger too. How extraordinary is it? That is the remarkable power of kindness.

Besides, under the influence of kindness, our words become tender and carefully chosen, more disciplined. Hence, our tone becomes softer. The three step process introduced below is a model developed by the Kindness Code through various experiments. At the heart of the concept lies the positive energy of Loving-kindness, that was introduced in Buddhist meditation practice.

Step 1: Spark (spark the positive emotion of loving kindness)

As the fist step, spark the positive loving-kindness energy inside you, by doing simple things like breathing exercises, positive imaginations, happy day-dreaming. 

Though this energy has a very short life, it is the powerful emotion to generate thoughts of kindness.

Step 2: Power up (be kind to you)

At this stage, take a moment to be kind to yourself, in order to make you feel safe, happy and healthy. For instance, if you feel thirsty, please serve yourself with a glass of water. Or else have a cup of coffee to energise you. This way, you extend your own kindness to make you feel happy, healthy and safe.

Step 3: Scale-up (extend your kindness to someone else)

Kindness is more powerful when you extend it beyond you. For instance, do random acts of kindness that will make someone else feel better. The more you carry out acts of kindness, they continue to spark loving-kindness inside you. Thus it builds up a scaling up process of kindness. For instance make a tea for some one else, and celebrate the positive feeling. Organise a charitable project and observe the lasting positive feeling for a longer period. As a result, you find a lasting form of motivation to energise you during your daily life.
